I agree. This site is sitting on the sidelines. When do you start watching Walsh again?

It is shocking for a 20 year incumbent who has been raising $$ for 3 full quarters (relative to Maffei's 2 quarters) to be under $500,000. Is Walsh retiring?

Not a chance he's retiring. For Walsh, this is a major fundraising push (look at past years at this time). He was SO bitter over his narrow victory in 06 (remember the hole in his heart?) that he needs to win again before he can retire. I would predict that either way this is his last race...but I would not doubt for a minute he is running and he'll whine his way through the full distance (how dare anyone dare run against me!!!).

I think the blogsite and campaign in general will heat up after the holidays and once the parties have decided on their presidential nominees. As far as I know Hillary has done a good job at getting rid of the carpetbagger accusation and is relatively popular in CNY. If she is the nominee her coatails will help Maffei.

One thing that will not help Maffei is the relative calmness of Iraq as compared to one year ago when so many more people were dying on a daily basis. This is not to say that Iraq is no longer a quagmire but it certainly is not in the news as much as it was. And furthermore Walsh changed his position on it. So Maffei's biggest rhetorical advantage may have been mitigated and this may complicate his job in drumming up votes.
