Walsh's refusal to back Iraqi timetable targeted
Rep. James Walsh is among six members of Congress to be targeted nationally in a new TV ad campaign aimed at persuading Congress to set a deadline for withdrawing troops from Iraq.
Dan Gage, Walsh's chief-of-staff in Washington, D.C., said the commercials are really about politics and the next election in 2008. Democrat Dan Maffei, who lost to Walsh by about 3,000 votes in November, has already declared his candidacy.
"This whole effort is nothing more than an unending campaign by Democratic activists based here in Washington to impact who holds our congressional seat," Gage said.
"This is not about politics," Funk said. "November 2008 is a long way away. But the more Republican members of Congress we can convince to do the right thing, the more likely it is that we can convince President Bush to change his course on Iraq."
