Scratch Bernardi Off the List
If Former Mayor Roy Bernardi had any dreams of being Jim Walsh's successor, this should be the death knell:
The city of Syracuse, already experiencing years of cutbacks in federal housing aid, will have to start shutting down programs if President Bush's budget is approved, city officials said Monday.
Bush proposed slashing the federal Community Development Block Grant program for New York state by up to $104 million, leaving $249 million for the state's cities and urban areas. New York receives the second highest amount of such aid in the nation.
HUD Deputy Secretary Roy Bernardi, former mayor of Syracuse, said such cuts were not easy to make, but necessary: "Difficult decisions had to be made, and that was one that we made," Bernardi said.
