Is Nancy Good for Jim?

While I don't think Walsh is going to run for re-election, Speaker Pelosi may be one of his best friends if he decides to and not in the way most Republicans hope. Nancy Pelosi isn't going to crash and burn as Speaker and hand over the House to Republicans by being too liberal, Pelosi is going to steer the ship just slightly left of center because she needs to protect her majority and quite a few Democrats who picked up seats in districts that Bush won in 04. However, by doing that she's likely going to protect some Republicans in swing districts too, and Walsh is at the top of that list. Strategically, what Pelosi is going to do is drive a wedge between Bush and the public on moderate issues and force him to veto otherwise popular legislation that he opposes. It is the right move for the Democratic Party, but also a huge gift to Congressmen like Walsh. It will give Walsh high profile issues to oppose Bush on and it could easily change that 90% to a 60%. So if Walsh does decide to run for re-election and (God forbid) win he might be sending Speaker Pelosi a thank you note.

On the other hand, Walsh really does not oppose Bush very often at all when there is a chance it will actually make a difference. He strikes me as the kind of person who asks permission before he votes, so I am not so sure this will benefit him at all.

None of that matters. Walsh will always win. He is unbeatable. So stop wasting your time thinking that he might lose. Think about donating money to Walsh and his campaign instead.

Anonymous at 3:33pm - did you not notice that Walsh didn't even carry his home county? And why on earth would anyone send him money? I don't know about you, but I have better things to do with my money than send it to lazy Washington fatcats who think they don't have to answer to the voters. Now that you mention it though, I am pretty sure Dan would not turn down any donations for the next round:

All the more reason for us to carefully monitor Walsh, his statements, votes and non-votes over the next two years, and to point out the flip-flops. Ammo for Maffei for Congress 2008!
