The Margin Narrows

Just saw a report on News10 that says the Monroe County recanvass produced another 100 votes for Dan - the report said the other 3 counties are not finished yet...

With respect 100 vote make little gain. Maffei will need to re-group and look at two years from now. He gave it one hell of a shot but Wayne County spoke.

Anybody got the breakdown on how the votes in the different counties went?

The dissing of Wayne Co people here & in other places, is not helpful. Many worked very hard & contributed $$ for Dan to overcome an enrollment advantage and lack of communications. Improvements can be worked on. Offers of help, not put downs, are welcome & more productive.

who slammed Wayne County? It was the county that made the difference in the race. I think anonymous 1 was pointing out how that county was the swing. I am sure Wayne County is a fine place to live.

How about the absentee votes from Onondaga county? I hear this won't be settled before 11/15. If so, let's count all votes before directing Maffei on what to do next.

I see the local Pubbie pooh-bahs must have gotten to the Post Standard with the "Experts Say" psychological horse pucky.

Let's count the votes, and I am with the anon. who asks not to diss Wayne County, I agree. One by one we can change minds, but remember, Wayne County didn't vote for FDR either. Change comes most slowly there.

the vote breakdown would need to be 70 30 thats not going to happen. Let's put this behind us and move on. the more we set ourselves up thinking Maffei now has a chance the more disapointed we will be when they do the counting. At beast Maffei will lose by only 2000 votes but most likely it will be 2500. Does it suck? hell yeah it does. This is the reality of it though.

Dear anon.

It may suck, but count the votes anyway.

Steve understand my point. 4000 or 2000 votes doesn't matter. yes count the 10,000 but this race is done. We need to move on and not get our hopes up thats all.

The key to Democrats winning is getting Wayne county AND Onandaga county on our side.

Its not enough to just get the cities. Karl Rove's strategy in redistricting was to balance city votes with country votes such that the Republicans would have the advantage.

I think Dan Maffei or similar candidate can win Wayne county in 2 years. But they need to focus on it and earn it. I think thats the key to victory.

I live in Wayne Co. and I can assure you that more Democrats got out to work for Dan than they have any candidate prior to this yr. We canvassed towns, phonebanked, pollsat, had meet Dan picnics, gatherings, etc. Our party is finaly up and running after many ys. of inactivity.I can assure you that Dan will do better in 08. Hillary and Eliot both won in Wayne Co. due to name recognition, I hope by 08 Dan's name will be well known too. Please offer help, not Repulicanlike mean spirited comments.

Not a single post has been "mean". People on here are speaking the truth. Wayne County had an impact. It was up to the Maffei campaign to deliver Wayne, they didn't. I think 08 things may change. My question is why are people in Wayne County thinking they have been dissed on here?

Yikes. I'm anonymous 10:44 PM. I live in Wayne County. I have read almost every post on this site the last few months. I don't think there have been any unfair shots at Wayne County. But it's obviously some people's opinion that Dan got beaten badly in Wayne.

I posted because I want to know what the numbers are so I know how far we have to go in '08, especially in Wayne Co. I too think this race is over. But I want the data, if anyone has it.

This time around I learned that sitting at home writing letters to the editor and leaning on everyone I know to vote for Dan isn't enough. Next time around I plan on doing more. I'm looking forward to working with everyone in '08.

It seems some of the comments posted earlier here re the voters & the margin in Wayne Co. have been removed. They weren't just in this thread, but others here in WW as well, post-election.

And as noted, a regretful attitude showed up on other national blogs, with such gems as where Wayne Co could be shoved to where it wouldn't do as much harm.

Frustration is understandable, and we can just imagine Dan's & Abby's frustration (as well as Eric Massa's - another who was stymied by habitual voting patterns in rural areas) at coming so close.

In the past Wayne Co has been written off by Democratic state & national candidates. We haven't even been able to get 4 lawn signs per town! This year the Clinton & Spitzer campaigns gave us some support and Dan was more present than any previous Democratic Congressional candidate in recent memory.

The Repubs have a permanent campaign co office, ran a 5 page insert in the local Penneysavers, did multiple direct mailings, did their dirty trick robo calls, made sure there were pix in Repub leaning weeklies of Jim handing out pork checks starting in Aug., etc. Just take a gander at JW's contributor lists.

Hoping Dan will agree to run again in '08 and we can ALL work together district wide to improve vote margins. In this household we appreciated the inclusiveness of Dan's "thank you."

A big THANK YOU to Dan, we are proud to have supported you!

Voting figures for 2006 can be obtained by going to each county's website. The NYS Bd of Elections has figures for past years, by county & race.

The final figures for 25th Congress Critter for 2002 in Wayne Co:
Walsh: 19,409
S Aldersley: 5,139
-------------------
The initial Wayne Co results for 2006 (does not include absentee or recanvasing):
Walsh: 14,276
Maffei: 9,584
-----------------------
Approx 24,800 voted on election day in Wayne Co. out of 58,900 registered voters.
--------------------
This means approx 5,000 voters were fed up enough to know they weren't terrorists for voting for a Democrat. This is huge!

Not really huge. it's a little movement not much. More needs to be done there.
