Maffei/Arcuri Stem Cell Event Today
I like this idea a lot:
Michael Arcuri and Dan Maffei, the 24th and 25th District Democratic candidates for Congress will hold a joint news conference Tuesday to discuss the issue of stem cell research and unveil their plan to utilize Central New York's resources to promote federal funding for stem cell research, lure industry to Central New York and rejuvenate the local economy.
Last week the Senate approved new stem cell research legislation. President Bush vetoed the piece of legislation and Jim Walsh and the Republicans in Congress rubber stamped Bush's veto by voting to uphold his decision. The bi-partisan legislation was being supported by conservative Senator Orin Hatch, Senator John McCain and former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
"After speaking with Dan, we felt that it was necessary to begin working on the issues that we care about right now, and not wait six months until we're in Congress," said Oneida District Attorney Michael Arcuri. "Stem-cell research will provided a unique opportunity to help find cures for life threatening diseases like cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's."
"Central New York should be a healthcare corridor," said Dan Maffei. "The 24th and 25th Congressional Districts stretch from the small town of Little Falls in Montgomery County to the City of Rochester. Our research hospitals should be hiring graduates from places like SUNY Upstate, Hamilton College, Syracuse University, Colgate and The Rochester Institute of Technology and pharmaceutical companies should be locating to this area, taking advantage of our resources and creating jobs."
Last week, The National Journal unveiled their Top 50 Most Competitive Congressional Races in the Country. Arcuri for Congress ranked 16th. Maffei for Congress ranked 39th.
