ACLU Attacks Walsh

The ACLU is up with radio ads attacking Jim Walsh for refusing to stand up to conservatives who are threatening the voting rights act. My initial impression is that the ACLU is using this as a lobbying tactic rather and not targeting Jim Walsh for defeat in November. It seems to have just started, because I can't find any news anywhere else about radio ads, but they are probably running ads in a few district of Republicans they consider swing votes on the issue.

At first I thought the ad would have little effect on the race because A) the Voting Rights Act is no a very salient issue in the district and B) the ACLU isn't the most popular group in the world. After thinking about it though, I think it may have a different positive effect. Ultimately separating Syracuse Walsh from Washington Walsh is going to be a key part of this race, and any time Jim Walsh is put on the defensive about his Washington ties and Republicans in Washington, his support will erode.

I agree that while ACLU isn't the best messenger, this is overall a good thing. Two reasons -- it sends the (true) message that Walsh is no moderate as he would like to claim, AND it signals to the Democratic base that Walsh is being "opposed."

Once the Democratic base comes home, its a matter of persuading a small share of independents and turnout.

I think there may be centrists who are on the fence and the ACLU can wake them up to whats going on in this country. There certainly are some people out there who believe the ACLU is a bad thing, but many of them are right wing nuts anyway. The fact is the ACLU exists to defend us against the kinds of abuses of power the Republican party is right now doing (see Paul Krugman's column today). Thank God for the ACLU!

Great stuff. Can you post a link to the online version of the ad?

I look for one before I did this post but couldn't find it. If I do manage to find it, I'll post it.
